South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust is proud to have secured a large grant from the Burdett Trust for Nursing to devise a bespoke leadership development programme for its Black, Asian, Minority and Ethnic (BAME) nursing workforce.
Working with Kingston University colleagues and Chief Nursing Officer’s Jane Cummings BAME Expert Advisory Group members the programme will promote development opportunities which aim to improve nursing retention rates. The initiative is locally driven as SWLSTG has acknowledged the challenge in retaining BAME nurses who are committed to providing best quality care and reinvigorating our existing workforce, especially in our community teams and specialist services.
The Burdett Programme offers nurse participants a unique opportunity to build leadership skills, learn about leadership styles, individual coaching and explore how cultural backgrounds influence professional development.
Capitalising on SWLSTG Head of Nursing Catherine Gamble’s recent appointment as Royal College of Nursing Mental Health Professional Lead, external speakers who will be sharing their experiences and expertise include: Cecelia Anim RCN, President, Bernell Bussue RCN London Regional Director and Wendy Irwin RCN Equality Lead.
The programme is just one example of how the Trust is committed to promoting equality and diversity across its workforce.
Director of Nursing and Quality Vanessa Ford said “Nursing staff are vital to a strong mental health workforce and as a Trust we are committed to investing in the development of all of our nursing staff.”
Dr Mark Potter, Medical Director and Chair of the Trust’s Equality and Diversity Group said “We look forward to seeing how staff engage with the programme and hope to explore options to roll out training to other specialities in the future.”
