Community services

Our services offers a range of assessments and treatments for children and young people with mental health issues which impact significantly on day to day life.

We have community services in five locations across south west London. They provide assessment and treatment for a range of common problems. There is one in each of the five boroughs covered by the Trust

Sutton

We provides mental health assessments and treatment for children and young people (aged 5-18) and their families living in the London Borough of Sutton

In Sutton we are part of the Sutton Alliance which includes NHS services and local organisations such as Jumpstart, a youth counselling service.

We offer a number of effective therapies based on the young person's needs and as agreed with the family through care planning.

Services offered include:
  • Assessment of moderate to severe mental health problems
  • Safety planning
  • Psycho-education and support to the family
  • Cognitive behaviour therapy
  • Brief/interpersonal therapy
  • Psychotherapy
  • Family therapy
  • Medication
  • Parent work around the child's needs

The treatment options will be fully explained and discussed before you start treatment. We also provide advice, consultation and support to schools and other organisations that work with young people.

Merton

We provide mental health assessments and treatment for children and young people (aged 5-18) and their families living in the London Borough of Merton.

Richmond

We provide mental health assessments and treatment for children and young people (aged 5-18) and their families living in the London Borough of Richmond.

We offer a number of effective therapies based on the young person's needs and as agreed with the family through care planning.

Services offered include:
  • Assessment of moderate to severe mental health problems
  • Safety planning
  • Psycho-education and support to the family
  • Cognitive behaviour therapy
  • Brief/interpersonal therapy
  • Psychotherapy
  • Family therapy
  • Medication
  • Parent work around the child's needs
  • Consultations and network meetings with other professionals

There are also four specialist community teams, which cover all the boroughs and one specialist community team, which works in Wandsworth only.

 

Neurodevelopmental assessment service

This service offers assessment where the Single point of access/Single point of referral or local team have identified a clear need for assessment of possible ASD/ADHD. The assessment will be comprehensive leading to a diagnostic report with care plan/recommendations.

Complex Learning Disabilities service

This is a dedicated service offered to Wandsworth patients. This team provides a range of services for children and young people aged up to 18 and their families and/or carers experiencing severe and enduring mental health difficulties.

Eating Disorder service

The EDS is an ‘end to end’ service for the treatment of eating disorders based at Springfield Hospital.

The service has strong links with local children's services at St George's Hospital. Local teams manage eating problems that are secondary or related to other disorders, such as depression.

Multisystemic therapy service (MST)

This service provides an intensive community-based intervention to young people aged 11-17, at risk of out-of-home placement (in care, residential school or secure setting) due to antisocial or delinquent behaviours and/or youth involved with the juvenile justice system.

The team is integrated within CAMHS despite having a different referral criteria as described below:

  • Young people at risk of entering care or custody
  • Young people at risk of entering residential school
  • Young people who are offending or who are at risk of offending / ‘On Community Orders’:
  • Young people who are physically aggressive at home, at school or in the community, and/or are at risk of school exclusion / antisocial behaviour
  • Young people at risk of absconding or are vulnerable to sexual exploitation
  • Substance abuse in the context of other behavioural difficulties listed above
  • Verbal aggression, verbal threats or harm to others

Emergency care service

The CAMHS Emergency Care Service (CECS) is a team of specialist nurses who provide assessment and management plans for young people up to age 18 who come to accident and emergency and children's wards having a mental health crisis.

The CECS also provide urgent 7 day follow ups for young people who are registered with a GP in one of the Trust's five boroughs and who have been seen at local and non-local hospitals.

Children and young people

Children and young people and their families can be referred to CAMHS (child and adolescent mental healh services)  if  children are finding it difficult to cope with family life, school or the wider world.

If these challenges are too much for family, friends or GPs to help with -  CAMHS may be able to help.

Types of problems CAMHS can help with include violent or angry behaviour, depression, eating difficulties, low self-esteem, anxiety, obsessions or compulsions, sleep problems, self-harming and the effects of abuse or traumatic events. CAMHS can also diagnose and treat serious mental health problems such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
