Tolworth Hospital Redevelopment

Welcome to the dedicated community page on the revised plans for Tolworth Hospital

The Trust is currently undertaking an ambitious Estate Modernisation Programme across our sites in Wandsworth, Richmond and Kingston. This includes work with our partners on revised plans for the redevelopment of Tolworth Hospital in Kingston.

New investment will deliver up to date healthcare facilities to ensure patients and service users have the best environment in which to recover. These facilities improve the experience of everyone who uses, works or comes into contact with mental health services in South West London and support the wider Trust mission to Make Life Better Together.

This work is part of the Trust’s Integrated Programme which is delivering investment across our people, services and environment over the coming years.

Working with our master developer STEP (Springfield & Tolworth Estate Partnership) and main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, the first stage, at Springfield Hospital in Tooting, is well underway and we are now focused on Tolworth Hospital.

As part of our plan to deliver better services in South West London, we will be redeveloping our outdated hospital buildings at Tolworth and transforming our facilities to provide modern and efficient mental health services.

In 2018 we received approval from Kingston Council to redevelop the hospital and, since this time, we have taken on board lessons learned at Springfield for the proposed works at Tolworth.

We are now taking the opportunity to revisit the plans, revise and improve them, to ensure we can provide the best possible facilities for our patients, staff and the community.

Changes we are bringing forward include:

  • Revising the layout of the new hospital to better reflect the needs of the Trust and the services we provide

  • Amending the appearance of the new hospital building, but retaining the brick-work design approach

  • Removing the two-storey car park and replacing with landscaped ground level parking to achieve a similar number of spaces

  • Revising the approach to energy, meaning we no longer need the previously approved separate energy centre

  • Retaining the existing Ellis Ward building adjacent to Draycot Road

Benefits of the plans

  • Updating the current, outdated buildings

  • Improving ward layouts, creating a good environment for patients and staff

  • Effective use of NHS resources in the long-term future

  • Providing care and accommodation of the very best standard

  • Reducing running costs so more can be spent on frontline services and jobs

Before we submit revised plans to Kingston Council, we are holding a series of engagement events in early March 2022 to showcase the emerging plans to the community and understand your views.

Consultation

Background

Our facilities at Tolworth Hospital simply do not meet today's need. Existing buildings are mainly old, unsuitable and expensive to run which means we have less to spend on frontline services and jobs. Through our programme we intend to invest in better mental health services to create modern mental health inpatient services at Tolworth Hospital.

Investing in Tolworth Hospital

We want to ensure our patients receive the best possible care in the best facilities. Our new buildings at Tolworth Hospital will meet the latest standards for mental health care as suggested by the Care Quality Commission (the NHS regulator), providing excellent facilities for our patients and a good working environment for our staff.

The new hospital will require millions of pounds of investment but overall there will be a significant reduction in running costs and excellent clinical benefits for our patients. Our aim is for our new hospitals at Springfield and Tolworth to lead the way and become centres of excellent for mental health service provision.

Our timelines

Following careful consultation with service users, carers and staff, we are planning to redevelop Tolworth Hospital alongside Springfield University Hospital as our two largest sites.

After the new Shaftesbury and Trinity buildings open at Springfield, Tolworth will form the second phase of our programme and will be subject to further approvalprocesses before we are able to start work.

Timings for developments at Tolworth are also dependent on the sales of our surplus estates, but are currently scheduled to commence in early 2023, concluding in early 2025.
