As part of the exciting transformations happening across South West London and St George’s, our Trust has been working on new plans for the redevelopment of Barnes Hospital in the Borough of Richmond. The vision at Barnes is a for a new mixed-use development comprising a mental healthcare facility, a school and residential housing.
In recent years have been working closely with patients, staff, community groups and our partners to progress this vision and develop the designs for our new healthcare facility. In this time our plans have evolved to ensure the proposals meet the needs for both mental health and special education provision in the area.
We would now like to invite our wider community to view the plans and share comments, prior to the submission of a planning application to the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Together with our development partners we will be holding a consultation event next week and are inviting our whole community to join us in person and share feedback on the final proposals.
When: Monday 28 November, 4-8pm
Where: Mortlake Hall, Mullins Path, London SW14 8EZ
Inpatient services have not been provided at Barnes Hospital since 2013. The site is underused and its condition and design make it unsuitable for developing modern mental health inpatient care. The Trust will be investing £11m to develop a state-of-the-art facility for the delivery of existing adult outpatient mental health services at Barnes Hospital.
Following an initial stage of marketing to inform options during 2017, the Trust began working to develop a vision for the site. Public consultations for a new planning application were held in November and December 2017. The events were well attended and following feedback from the public, the plans were revised and the Trust held a further two public exhibitions in September 2018.
Alongside the planning application, the Trust progressed sales of surplus parts of the site in order to provide funding for our wider Estate Modernisation Programme. This includes the redevelopment of the Trust's two inpatient sites at Springfield Hospital in Wandsworth and Tolworth Hospital in Kingston, which serve people across South West London. As a result, in March 2019 the Trust sold half of the Barnes Hospital site to a residential developer.
The site had an existing outline planning permission, granted in 2020, for development of the new healthcare and education facilities, together with residential use. The educational facility planned is a Special Educational Needs School. This is led by LocatED, an arms-length body of the Department for Education, and will be operated by the Beckmead Trust. The residential component of the development is being brought forward by LS Estates and a planning application for this part of the development is currently awaiting determination. We hope to see you there on Monday to share more on our plans.
