SWLSTG welcomes ‘Good’ rating by Care Quality Commission

South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust (SWLSTG) today welcomed the publication of the Care Quality Commission’s report which has rated their overall services as ‘Good’, following an inspection in September.

In March, the CQC inspected ten services and praised  caring staff across all services saying ‘care was delivered by hard-working, caring and compassionate staff’ who were ‘enthusiastic, passionate and demonstrated a clear commitment to their work.’ The Inspectors also said that they ‘saw many examples of where staff really knew the patients and their carers well and were attentive to their individual needs’.

Returning to carry out a follow up inspection in September, the Inspectors said that they were impressed by the improvements that were evident in the Trust’s supervision, administrative and medicines management processes and they were now confident that eight out of the ten core services were rated as good and the Trust now rates as good overall for well led, caring, effective and responsive.

The report highlights several areas of good practice, including:

  • The caring staff across all services: 'staff were enthusiastic, passionate and demonstrated a clear commitment to their work. Care was delivered by hard-working, caring and compassionate staff'
  • Positive developments made in acute inpatient services, community learning disability services, child adolescent and mental health services
  • Young people and their families were treated as partners in their care' and stated that 'staff treated young people and their families with kindness, dignity and respect'
  • The Trust's record of challenging stigma and discrimination saying that 'excellent work is taking place with local communities to break down the stigma associated with mental illness' and make services more accessible

There had been significant improvements in the acute care pathway. Whilst demand was still very high and this presented a daily challenge, patients had an improved level of support to access the services they clinically needed.                                                                                                                                          

David Bradley, Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted to receive a rating of ‘Good’ across all our services. This achievement has only been possible due to the hard work and dedication of all our staff. I am very proud of the professional and dedicated way in which they support our patients every single day.

“I am pleased that the CQC have confidence in our services and have seen how hard our staff work to continuously deliver high quality patient care.  The inspection has also helped us learn where we need to do more and over the next year we will focus on improving elements of community and rehab services.”

Paul Lelliott, the Deputy Chief Inspector of Hospitals and CQC’s lead for mental health, said: “I am very pleased with the significant improvements achieved at South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, which means people that use the trust’s services, will be getting better quality care.”
