Trust awarded stage 2 Triangle of Care status

Trust awarded stage 2 Triangle of Care status

We are very proud to announce that following a detailed interview and scrutiny process of SWLSTG’s performance and work to date as part around our carers agenda, we have been awarded the prestigious Stage 2 Triangle of Care Membership Scheme.

Following a peer review event, we became a 2 star Trust, one of only 20 Mental Health Trusts across the UK who have been given this award.

What is Triangle of Care?

The Triangle of Care membership scheme was developed by The Carers Trust and carers themselves. The ‘Triangle of Care’ is a working collaboration, or “therapeutic alliance” between the service user, professional and carer that promotes safety, supports recovery and sustains well-being. The Triangle of Care was initially developed to improve mental health acute services by adopting six principles. It is widely accepted that these key principles can be applied to all service areas.

What are the standards?

The six principles are:

  • Carers and the essential role they play should be identified at first contact with services or as soon as possible thereafter.
  • Staff should be aware of carers and trained to engage with carers more effectively.
  • Policies and protocols should be in place to ensure confidentiality and improve information sharing with carers.
  • Defined roles (Carer link workers), responsible for carers should be in place.
  • Carers should be “introduced” to the service and provided with a range of information.
  • A range of carer support services should be available to offer or signpost carers to.

What initiatives have we put in place to improve our work with carers ?

Over that last 18 months, we have been working on many initiatives to improve the way we work with our Carers and as a result improve the experience of the individuals who access our services . There is a Triangle of Care Task and Finish Group that has addressed many of the issues across our services:

  • We have identified Carer Champions across all our services who have received extra training in being “Carer Aware “ and how to access support / services for our Carers .
  • We have established excellent relationships with all our borough Carer Centres who are there to support carers who are signposted to them.
  • We have introduced Carer Notice Boards across units and are working on improving the leaflets / information we give to our carers
  • We have clear Trust objectives around improvements we want to make for our carers and service users.
  • We are about to launch an e-learning Basic Carer Awareness Training package for all staff .
