OCD/BDD Level 5 service - National

We treat the most severely ill patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) in the form of intensive home-based therapy, outpatients and in-patient treatment . Patients who are not eligible for treatment under the arrangements with NHS England HSS may still be treated but in these cases funding needs to be sought locally We are happy to offer advice & guidance on treatment to secondary care mental health teams throughout the UK.

Seacole ward – 24 hour inpatient unit

Our team comprises psychiatrists from training grades to consultants, nurses, specialist CBT therapist for inpatient CBT and intensive home-based therapy, health care assistants, dieticians, physiotherapist and occupational therapist.

Anyone who uses our services first gets an assessment of their mental health needs and a plan of the care and support they will receive. They will also will also have one named person who co-ordinates their care and support. This person will be called either a named professional or,  if your needs are more complex,  a care co-ordinator. This person should be your main point of contact.  You can speak to them about how your treatment and support are going. If you come to hospital we will make sure you are given information about your rights and that you are only in hospital for as long as you need.  When you arrive you will be given a welcome pack which will give you and your family all the information you need to know  - like the visiting times and phone numbers.

We combine behavioural and cognitive methods with state-of-the art psychopharmacological and other treatments where necessary. We liaise closely with specialists who work in the neurobiology and psychopharmacology of these disorders as well as with psychotherapists of various schools.

Each patient is fully assessed and has an individualised treatment programme. Progress is constantly monitored using questionnaires of known reliability and validity. Thus, any treatment which is not effective is discovered early and the reasons why this is the case are examined and treatment changed or modified.

The e-RS route is now the only way for GP Practices to send in referrals. This means that all first outpatient referrals must come into our Trust via the Electronic Referral Service (e-RS).   

We accept referrals of patients with OCD, BDD and other severe, complex anxiety disorders who do not meet the criteria for acceptance under the commissioning arrangements for NHS England HSS. In this situation funding should be arranged locally by the CCG or alternatively can be arranged privately. We do ask that the local services remain involved throughout our intervention and that a Care Coordinator is allocated. This is to ensure continuity of care and also allows some education and help for local providers."

Written referrals should come from a consultant psychiatrist and should include presenting problems, past psychiatric history, prior treatment, medication history, current care plan and the following forms:
