National Deaf Services

National Deaf Services provides a range of comprehensive mental health services for Deaf adults, children and their families.

We are committed to:

  • the employment of deaf service users and carer involvement in all aspects of care

  • respect and promotion of Deaf culture and language.

Deaf Adult services

We provide assessment, treatment and interventions for a full range of mental illnesses, behavioural and psychological problems in adults with severe to profound hearing loss.  We also work with Deaf people with visual impairment.

About the Deaf Adult service

Adult Deaf Services provides:
  • 16-bed inpatient unit
  • psychological therapies and assessment
  • multi-disciplinary community team
  • assertive outreach community support (London only).

We provide assessment, treatment and interventions for a full range of mental illness, behavioural and psychological problems in adult with severe to profound hearing loss. We also work with deaf people with visual impairment.

Using psychosocial interventions and promoting recovery and social inclusion, we encourage user and carer involvement in creating care packages.

The team consists of:
  • adult psychiatrists
  • learning disability psychiatrist
  • mental health and learning disability nurses
  • occupational therapists
  • speech and language therapist
  • social workers
  • psychoanalytic psychotherapists
  • clinical and counselling psychologists
  • community mental health nurses
  • outreach workers (clinical case managers)
  • Deaf community support workers
  • admin and secretarial staff.

Funding
All patients are funded by NHS England.

Referring to Deaf Adult services

Deaf Adult Community Services (DACT)
We accept referrals from local mental health teams and can then arrange joint assessment or other input.

For everyone else (e.g. GPs, social workers, family, carers, prospective service users) - you can contact our Helpline in working hours for general advice on how to get help. Our Helpline is staffed by an experienced clinician Mon to Fri 9am-4pm excluding bank holidays.

Deaf Adult Psychological Therapy
We offer psychological therapy for Deaf adults - including CBT, CAT (cognitive analytic therapy), DIT (dynamic interpersonal therapy), MBT (mentalisation based therapy), psychodynamic therapy and integrative counselling. We offer these therapies at Springfield Hospital or at one of our satellites clinics in Maidstone, Canterbury and Bromley.

We accept referrals from GPs and please note that funding agreement will be required.

Deaf Adult Inpatient Services (Bluebell Ward)
Referrals to our inpatient service at Springfield hospital are accepted from GPs or other health professionals and from the voluntary sector/non-statutory organisations.

Deaf Adult Community Services is not an Emergency Service. After 5pm you call the 24/7 Mental Health Support Line - 0800 028 8000. The line offers emotional support & advice. If you are Deaf and are a BSL user, you can call the Mental Health Support line using Sign Live Video Relay Service (VRS). On computer go to http://signlive.co.uk/login/ and register using Facebook, Google or email. On phone, IPAD or tablet download SignLive's app for free & register. In an emergency please contact - NHS 111 for advice, or GP, or attend local A&E department.

We offer assessment and treatment for Deaf children and Deaf young people under the age of 18 with emotional, behavioural and mental health problems, working with their families.

About Deaf CAMHS

We offer assessment and treatment for Deaf children and Deaf young people under the age of 18 with emotional, behavioural and mental health problems, working with their families.

The team sees children with a wide range of problems from fears and worries to difficult and challenging behaviour. The team uses a wide range of therapeutic interventions including family work, counselling, psychotherapy, behavioural and medical treatments.

The team consists of:

  • Child and adolescent psychiatrists
  • Mental health nurses and clinical nurse specialist
  • Occupational therapists
  • Speech and language therapist
  • Social workers
  • Family therapists
  • Deaf family support workers
  • Clinical and counselling psychologists
  • Community teams in London, Kent and Cambridge
  • Specialist Mental Health Practitioner
  • School teachers and support staff
  • Admin and secretarial staff

Working closely with families, schools and local children and adolescent mental health services, CAMHS provides:

  • 6-bed inpatient unit in London
  • Psychological therapies and assessment
  • Family therapy
  • Outreach service in London, Kent and Cambridge

Please note that due to the large area we cover we are unable to respond to emergencies. If your child needs urgent or emergency mental health care, please either contact your GP or take them to your local A&E. Once there, a Doctor can request an urgent mental health risk assessment from the local CAMHS Service. If you need a qualified BSL/English interpreter please make them aware when you register.

Referring to Deaf CAMHS

National Deaf CAMHS - Inpatient Service (Corner House)
Corner House is a six-bed national specialist assessment and treatment unit for deaf children and adolescents aged between 8 and 18, with severe complex emotional and psychological problems.

Referrals can be made by a range of services including CAMHS, paediatricians, audiologists, social services, schools, GP's and national deaf outreach service.

We encourage telephone contact to discuss potential referrals. Following this a referral form is completed and sent via post / fax or secure e-mail to the unit.

The unit is commissioned by NHS England and referrals are accepted from within the UK. For referrals outside England funding will need to be agreed with the local team prior to admission.

Children can be referred by anyone who has contact with the child, such as a teacher, social worker, GP or the parents themselves.

However, a referral can only be made if the parent or guardian is fully aware of the referral and has given their consent.

We encourage telephone contact to discuss potential referrals.
